If you’re a parent, you’re probably pretty attuned with that feeling in your gut when something is wrong with one of your kids. It’s an instinct we all recognize, and when the alarm bells go off, you spring into action. Because nothing is more important than making sure your child is okay.
Maybe you’ve been there: driving your child to the hospital or a crisis unit, trying to stay calm while your mind races with questions and fears. Navigating those emotions is overwhelming on its own, but when you’re faced with the complicated mental healthcare system, it can feel almost impossible to know where to turn or what to do next.
For years, NAMI Indiana leaders and volunteers have heard families say the same thing: “I wish I had known about NAMI sooner.” Parents and caregivers, in particular, often express how difficult it is to find the right support and resources during a mental health crisis.
That’s why NAMI Indiana created NAMI in the Lobby—a program designed to meet families where they are, providing support, education, and resources right when they need them most. Whether it’s guidance on navigating the mental healthcare system, finding tools for self-care, or simply connecting with someone who understands, NAMI in the Lobby ensures parents and caregivers are not alone.
If you’re ever at Riley Hospital for Children on a Monday or Thursday evening, stop by the NAMI in the Lobby table. It’s a place where you can find resources, connect with someone who understands, and know that you don’t have to navigate this journey alone.
And if you’ve been through your own mental health journey—as a caregiver or individual—consider volunteering with NAMI Indiana. Your story and experience can make a real difference for families who are facing some of the hardest days of their lives.
Because no parent should have to figure it out alone.
